I was commissioned by St Albans Council to document their summer 2018 exhibition ‘SquatLife’ that revolved around the photos of Dave Kotola - a squatter himself in the 80s - and built upon this gallery to include projects to raise awareness of the issue of homelessness in St Albans.
I met a lot of interesting people from varying walks of life throughout the project. It let me see talk to people who were experiencing homelessness right then, and those who had in the past. I also met Dave and many of his friends from his squatting days at the official opening of the SquatLife exhibition. Though they’d all grown apart and gone their separate ways, it was easy to see what drew them together; a sense of togetherness and family that they didn’t necessarily find elsewhere in their lives but one which a lot of us take for granted.
