Dan Pearce - Ali

Dan was - unintentionally - the last person I’d shot with before COVID-19 Lockdown kicked in. He was also the first person I shot with when things eased up.

Every so often, Dan creates a piece to experiment with new techniques and methods - a warm-up, if you will - and uses whatever is going on in the news at that point to create the piece.

The piece was influenced by the BlackLivesMatter movement, and Dan had found a Muhammad Ali quote to base his piece around.

I’ve said it before, but it’s always fun to push myself to experiment more with my work with Dan - in lockdown, I’d been focusing on improving my colour-correction and sound design understanding, as well as trying to figure out how I want to push my work moving forward.

A big part of that is leaning more into the imperfections of work.

I think it’s a quote by Gary Vaynerchuk; “Perfectionism is protection of the ego”, it’s stuck with me every since I’ve read it wayback when. I used to want to be able to make the best looking stuff, but I always found myself enjoying the unplanned stuff that happened.

Finding a compromise between the two is where I find myself currently, and I always appreciate Dan allowing me to experiment when we work together.
